The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced the immediate suspension of the Party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, as well as two NWC members, Nnadi Clarkson, National Auditor, and Chukwuma Uchechukwu, National Youth Leader.
According to reports, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, announced in a statement made on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, that party members had been suspended due to suspicions of significant financial malfeasance, embezzlement, theft, and diversion of funds. Aiyenigba added that the move to suspend the National Chairman and other implicated NWC members is meant to allow for a thorough inquiry.

According to the SDP chieftain, Sadiq Umar Abubakar, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), has taken over leadership as Acting National Chairman in the meantime, in accordance with the party’s Constitution.
Aiyenigba further stated that the suspensions of these officers have been informed to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and all relevant agencies.

The statement reads, “The decision followed resolutions made by members of the National Working Committee (NWC), where overwhelming evidence was presented linking the suspended officials to a series of unauthorized financial transactions, personal enrichment schemes, and the movement of funds from the party’s accounts without any NWC approval.

“This incident initially came to light when it was revealed that the National Chairman had issued an unauthorized Financial Statement to INEC, as was required of all political parties.

“A summary of the fraudulent account was also published in newspapers.” When the NWC discovered this, it resolved to submit the fake abnormalities to law enforcement agencies.

“The NWC’s action to suspend the National Chairman and two NWC members involved in the gross financial misconduct will also demonstrate to the general public that the Party, widely regarded by Nigerians as a disciplined party and a credible alternative political platform for national redemption, has zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of power. Our political party’s integrity must always be protected.

“An interim investigating team has been formed to audit all financial documents and suggest additional disciplinary or legal action.

“The diverted money include hundreds of millions of naira, including donations and resources derived from the sale of nomination forms for the 2023 general elections, as well as other funds from party accounts.

“The suspension of Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, Nze Nnadi Clarkson, and Uchechukwu Ogbonna Chukwuma takes immediate effect.”
