Six All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants for the position of governorship have jointly disowned the purported adoption of the former Secretary to Yobe State Government, Alh. Baba Mallam Wali, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for Yobe State, stressing that only a free and fair primary election would be acceptable to them.
To make their position known, they issued a statement at the end of a meeting held on Thursday in Abuja where issues of common concern were discussed.
The aspirants are Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, senator representing Yobe South; Bashir Sheriff Machina, former Chairman of the Governing Council of Nigerian Shippers’ Council; and Kashim Musa Tumsah, former board member of NNPCL.
Others are Engr. Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja, former NEMA DG; Lawan Kolo Geidam, former Mandate Secretary, Youths and Sports, FCT; and IGP Mohammed Alkali Baba, former Inspector-General of Police who all agreed that the adoption of Wali was a breach of the Electoral Act and the APC Constitution.
\”That the alleged endorsement of a particular candidate as the APC gubernatorial consensus candidate does not comply with the general requirements and provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC Constitution and is therefore unacceptable.
“That the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act relating to consensus be strictly adhered to in order to ensure that an acceptable and credible gubernatorial candidate of the APC emerges in Yobe State.
“That there should be direct primaries which is free, fair, transparent and credible in line with the APC guidelines on direct primaries, failing an agreement on consensus.
The aspirants argued that Baba Wali was not picked as the consensus candidate in accordance with the laid down rules, and if consensus must be an option, it must conform with the general requirements and provisions of the relevant laws guiding it.

Part of the statement read: “That the purported endorsement of a particular candidate as the APC gubernatorial consensus candidate does not conform with the general requirements and provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC Constitution and is therefore unacceptable.
“That the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act relating to consensus should be strictly adhered to, to ensure the emergence of an acceptable and credible gubernatorial candidate of the APC in Yobe State.
“That, failing an agreement on consensus, there should be free, fair, transparent and credible direct primaries in line with the APC guidelines on direct primaries.”
The aspirants insisted that laid-down rules were not followed in picking Baba Wali as the consensus candidate, noting that if consensus must be an option, it must conform with the general requirements and provisions of the relevant laws guiding it.
