Former banker and economist, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has become the first presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to officially submit completed nomination forms ahead of the party’s presidential primary for the 2027 election.

Hayatu-Deen had emerged as the first aspirant to obtain the party’s expression of interest and nomination documents, and he further consolidated his early lead in the race when he submitted the forms in Abuja on Wednesday evening.

The development signals the commencement of increased political activities within the ADC as the countdown to the 2027 general elections gathers momentum.

Hayatu-Deen, who spoke to supporters shortly after submitting the forms, said his ambition was spurred by the pressing need to confront the worsening economic challenges and insecurity in Nigeria.

He said if voted into power, his administration would work to lower the rising cost of living, create jobs and restore safety in the country.

He said his government would focus on “aggressively bringing down the skyrocketing cost of living” while offering “a clear roadmap for mass job creation”.

The presidential aspirant vowed to introduce “a strategic plan to end insecurity across the federation.”

Hayatu-Deen’s early moves could make him one of the leading contenders in the ADC ahead of the party’s primary election. Political activities are expected to increase in the coming weeks as more aspirants are expected to throw their hats into the presidential ring.

Reports said the opposition party has been gaining prominence lately amid political realignments and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 polls, with a number of top politicians across party lines reportedly exploring alliances on its platform.
