Lamido Rules Out Senate Re-Election Bid Over Limited Legislative Powers

Ibrahim Lamido, the senator from Sokoto East Senatorial District, has explained why he has chosen not to run for a second term in the Senate.

In an interview with reporters in Sokoto on Monday, he clarified that the Senate does not have the administrative authority required to address the growing insecurity plaguing local communities.

He clarified that his desire to personally address the security issues Sokoto East residents face was the driving force behind his choice to run for governor.

The congressman claimed that numerous local residents had pushed him to run for executive position, claiming that only a governor had the power and resources necessary to successfully combat banditry and other violent crimes plaguing the area.

“Because my people are experiencing insecurity, I wanted to run for governor.” Lamido stated, “As a senator, I lack the executive authority necessary to properly handle the matter.

However, as the African Democratic Congress reached a consensus to nominate Mannir Dan’iya, a former deputy governor of Sokoto State, as its candidate for the 2027 governorship, the senator was unable to clinch the party’s governorship ticket.

Lamido declared that he would stick with the ADC and contribute to the party’s success in the upcoming elections even though he had lost the ticket.

“I’ll stay in the ADC and back the winning candidate. For me, politics is about serving my people, not about making money,” he said.

In order to maintain party unity, he also revealed that every candidate running for the party’s governorship endorsed the consensual plan.

“Out of the ten candidates, the remaining nine have all agreed with the party’s decision,” he continued.
