The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has dismissed speculations that former president Goodluck Jonathan will run in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike said no politician can say he is in a race unless he shows interest.
The Minister disclosed this on Monday during his monthly media parley in Abuja.
“Public pressure or persuasion is not being exerted on any politician to contest elections. Aspirants normally indicate interest before support is given,” Wike argued.
He said that tales of politicians being persuaded by the public to run for office are often misleading.
Wike said that usually people who end up contesting elections have shown interest, either directly or indirectly, before supporters start rallying around them.
“You don’t go and get someone to run,” he said. Somebody will say “I’d rather go run and come and talk to you.”
Nobody comes to you, and says, I mean…, nobody sits there and says,
“When you hear sometimes politicians say people want me to come out, nobody wants anybody to come out. No one is sleeping inside, people will say come and run for an election. You have signaled that you are interested.
Jonathan ever show any interest? Respect him. He’s a former President. “Nobody can tell a candidate by body language.”
