Julius Abure, a factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, has warned the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership against giving former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and his followers too much power.
In response to rumors of disputes over the distribution of elective positions within the NDC, Abure made the comments in a statement released on June 8, 2026.
Based on the Labour Party’s experience during and after the 2023 general election, the chairman of the Labour Party claimed that the NDC leadership, led by Senator Seriake Dickson, had made the essential choice to deny all political positions sought by Obi’s followers.
Abure claimed that instead of fostering the party’s expansion, a number of political office holders who rose to prominence on the Labour Party platform ultimately turned against the party leadership.
It’s said that history tends to repeat itself. Abure stated, “Senator Dickson and Co. have observed their trajectory and learned from what happened to us.”
He claims that a number of lawmakers who profited from the Labour Party’s platform then sided with Obi and got embroiled in disagreements regarding the organization’s leadership.
Ahead of the 2023 elections, Abure said, the Labour Party leadership made a number of compromises, including catering to Obi’s and many of his supporters’ interests.
We gave tickets to the majority of his fans based purely on his body language. We thought we were investing in those individuals, thus the majority of the tickets were handed away for free,” he said.
Additionally, after winning elections on the LP platform, Abure accused certain elected officials of supporting attempts to overthrow the party leadership.
He claimed, “Obi took all those elected under the party to fight the party leadership.”
In order to maintain internal stability, Abure contended that political parties should maintain a balance in the allocation of posts and power among their members.
It is excellent that Seriake Dickson did not provide Obi supporters with what they required in the NDC. In order to have individuals who will speak up and support him when the chips are down, he had to bring his own people, he continued.
Additionally, the chairman of the Labour Party accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, of playing a role in the leadership crisis that arose within the party following the 2023 elections. He claimed that some party leaders had accepted claims that the tenure of the party’s executives had expired.
“The party’s leaders, especially Peter Obi and Alex Otti, decided to take over,” claimed Abure.
He insisted that inquiries from the public regarding the Labour Party’s handling of its connection with Obi and his followers during the 2022–2023 election season prompted his remarks.
