Adewole Adebayo, the Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has said that the office of the President of Nigeria should not be viewed as a role for old people.
He said this in an interview on Symfoni TV on Wednesday, where he talked about age and leadership in politics, it was reported.
Adebayo said the job of a president is like football, saying that if someone loves the game, it is not realistic to expect an 80-year-old to still play for the Super Eagles.
He said the work of Nigeria’s president requires the same kind of strong physical and mental energy as a coach or team captain in top-class soccer.
Such a position demands stamina and alertness that may prove difficult for very old politicians to sustain, he said.
He also said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should not look at the presidency as the only way to serve the nation.
“I am not being an ageist but the presidency of Nigeria is not for the elderly, because no matter how passionate you are and how much you love football, you cannot play for the Super Eagles at 80 years.
“The President of Nigeria needs the same kind of stamina as a coach or captain of the Super Eagles. So, I don’t think the only way for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to serve Nigeria is to be President.
“Even the late former President Muhammadu Buhari himself when he was elected in 2015 said that he wished he had gotten the position when he was younger.
