Anti-Tinubu Post Case: Sowore Says Authorities Are Focused On Punishment

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and activist, has accused the prosecution in his current case with the federal government of punishing him rather than following due process.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS, Sowore denied that his accusation against President Bola Tinubu was only a political viewpoint, insisting that it was founded on facts that he feels can be tested through the court process.
“It is a factual statement. And it states that anyone who has been involved in drug dealing or trafficking has no status of limitation.

“Even if you are president, the NDLEA can still try you after you leave office. That is something we can bring up. In this situation, it’s not simply that.

“During End SARS, there was an active case in the Federal High Court involving the embezzlement of billions of dollars in taxes that were meant to be paid by Alpha Beta, which is tied to this president. He never handled that particular case.

“We were told after End SARS that the paperwork were burned in court to cover it up. Sowore added, “And we have several of these.”

Sowore went on to say that he had encouraged the authorities to allow the case to go to trial so that he could submit his evidence, but that instead, efforts had been made to undermine his defense.

“What I told them was, why don’t you just relax? Let’s try to prove this case in court. But just as we were about to prove the case, our counsel was tearing apart their only witness—a DSS employee who claimed to have discovered that I made this remark. The judge became aggravated.

“He said ‘Stop. If you don’t stop, please kneel down here. It’s never occurred before. Trying to get my primary attorney, Marshal Abubakar, to kneel before a judge because they didn’t want us to deliver our evidence.

“They are interested in convicting, punishing me without conviction,” he stated.

Sowore contended that freedom of expression should be guaranteed by the rule of law and not determined by those in power. He insisted that the Cybercrime Act not be used to muzzle critics or criminalize statements regarding public authorities.

His comments come as he faces a prosecution for social media statements in which he referred to President Tinubu as a “criminal.”

The case resulted in his release being revoked after he failed to appear in court, although he was eventually given new bail under tougher terms.

Sowore also emphasized that his advocacy is motivated by a desire for justice rather than political ambition, stating that he will continue to speak out against what he views injustice regardless of the personal consequences.
