EDITORIAL | TINUBU’S DEMOCRATIC TEST: WHEN LEADERSHIP RISES ABOVE POLITICS

In a political environment where partisan interests often overshadow national values, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves commendation for demonstrating that democracy is bigger than any individual, party or political ambition.

His handling of the electoral process, particularly his insistence that every participant must play according to the rules of engagement, reflects the responsibility expected of a leader who understands that the credibility of democracy depends on fairness, transparency and respect for the people’s mandate.

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s response is equally worthy of recognition. His willingness to acknowledge the outcome and extend support across political lines sends an important message: political competition should end where the collective interest of the people begins.

For us at Alaga360 News, this is the kind of political maturity Nigeria needs.

Opposition politics should not mean rejecting everything simply because it comes from the ruling party. A responsible opposition must scrutinise government, expose weaknesses and demand accountability—but it must also possess the courage to acknowledge good governance and commend actions that strengthen democratic institutions.

It is therefore unfortunate when political discourse becomes so polarised that even commendable democratic gestures are viewed through the lens of suspicion.

Nigeria needs politicians who can disagree without becoming enemies, compete without destroying institutions, and acknowledge good deeds without feeling that doing so diminishes their political relevance.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has repeatedly presented himself as a leader determined to confront some of Nigeria’s deepest challenges, including poverty, unemployment, hunger, illiteracy, inadequate healthcare and homelessness. Whether one supports his administration or not, these challenges require national cooperation rather than perpetual political warfare.

The declaration by Adm. Fadairo Olawunmi Jamiu MCIA, National Convener of the Tinubu Consolidation Movement, that his organisation is prepared to mobilise millions of youths and women in support of President Tinubu demonstrates the depth of political support surrounding the administration.

However, beyond partisan mobilisation, the greater issue is the future of Nigeria.

The question Nigerians should continually ask is not merely who belongs to which political party, but who possesses the vision, competence, courage and capacity to move Nigeria forward?

For now, Alaga360 News believes that the political class must learn an important lesson from this episode: acknowledging what is right does not make one weak; it makes one principled.

Democracy thrives when victory is accepted with humility, opposition is exercised responsibly, and national interest remains greater than political ambition.

Alaga360 News therefore commends every political actor who chooses democratic principles over partisan convenience. Nigeria needs more of this—and less of the politics of permanent opposition.
