Riyom Attack: Two Security Personnel Killed as Violence Hits Plateau Community

Two security operatives have been killed, while some persons were injured when unidentified gunmen attacked Tanjol and Tarai communities in Jol District of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attackers were also reported to have carted away the firearms of the slain security personnel during the incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon,

Sources from the community said the attackers invaded the two communities at about 2: 30 p.m. when suspected armed attackers stormed communities in the area, firing sporadically at the locals.

However in an attempt to repel the attack following SOS from the villagers the operatives reportedly encountered fierce resistance from the attackers, resulting in a gun battle that lasted for several minutes.

Two of the security personnel were said to have paid the supreme price during the fierce encounter.

Some residents were also reportedly injured in a cross fire during an exchange with the gunmen.while one person was declared missing.

National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Builders Association, Rwang Tengwong, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on telephone, said that the attack started at about 1 pm on Sunday.

He said, “I was told that the attack started at about 1 pm and lasted several minutes. The incident created fear and tension among residents, particularly those in communities around Jol.”

He said he will soon issue a statement on the incident.
