The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of using political messaging to defend its economic record while Nigerians continue to face high living costs.
The allegation was contained in an Independence Day statement signed by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong.
The statement followed Tinubu’s October 1 national broadcast, in which the President defended his economic reforms and said the country had reached a turning point after years of difficult adjustments.
Tinubu said Nigeria had corrected its economic direction and declared that the “age of reform” had given way to an “age of prosperity.” He also acknowledged that many Nigerians continued to struggle with food, transportation, school fees and medical expenses.
The Turaki-led faction disputed the administration’s presentation of the economy, saying citizens were more concerned about the actual cost of living than government projections.
It pointed to food inflation, which NBS reported at 19.57 per cent year-on-year in August 2026. The figure was lower than the 20.31 per cent recorded in July, indicating a slowdown in the rate of food-price increases. However, the faction argued that the high level continued to place pressure on household finances.
The party also questioned the affordability of credit for businesses, arguing that high borrowing costs could limit investment and expansion.
It accused the APC-led government of worsening hardship and criticised what it described as efforts to portray the administration as a deliverer of Nigerians from economic difficulties.

The opposition faction also raised concerns about insecurity and political polarisation, saying these issues should form part of the national discussion ahead of 2027.
The group said Nigerians would have an opportunity during the next general election to assess the performance of the present administration and determine the political leadership they want.
The faction further urged citizens not to be swayed by political rhetoric, saying government policies should instead be judged by their impact on households and businesses.
The statement concluded with another reference to the biblical story used by the President, saying Nigerians would eventually move beyond the difficulties they currently face.
