Nigeria has secured a three-year seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council after receiving 172 votes in an election by the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
The Federal Government disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.
According to the ministry, Nigeria’s new mandate will run from January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2029. The country was elected alongside 14 others.
Nigeria secured 172 of the 181 votes cast in the election, with the government describing the outcome as a demonstration of support from UN member states for the country’s candidature.
