36 State Governors Declare Position On State Police

The thirty-six state governors in Nigeria have supported the establishment of State Police in the country.

The position of the Governors was contained in a communiqué signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

It was reports that the decision was taken at the NGF meeting in Abuja which lasted from Wednesday to early Thursday.

The Governors argue the move is constitutional and in keeping with federalism and citizen rights.

The communique said the Governors took the decision following a presentation by the Forum’s secretariat and a delegation of the Honourable Attorneys-General of the States on efforts to support the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The governors said they had a dedicated consultation with the attorneys-general to examine the proposed constitutional amendments and frameworks.

Recall that the bill for the establishment of State Police has scaled second reading at the Senate and passed by the House of Representatives.

The governors also reaffirmed their commitment to continuous power sector reforms and to deepening collaboration among stakeholders to grow access to reliable and affordable electricity for Nigerians.

The communiqué said the Forum was presented with a proposal to expand electricity access through large-scale decentralised solar generation integrated with a national high-voltage transmission network.

Here, the governors recognised the potential of the initiative to underpin industrialisation, enhance energy security, reinforce state electricity markets and drive economic growth.

They also pledged to support the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative while reaffirming their commitment to improving nutrition outcomes and reducing child malnutrition throughout Nigeria, noting the ongoing work on the National Nutrition Bill and encouraging continued engagement with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the legal and policy framework for nutrition governance.
