Singer Abiye Jumbo, popularly called Mr 2Kay, has revealed how a disagreement over compensation following a 2017 robbery incident contributed to his decision to leave his former record label.
The musician made the disclosure during an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, alleging that his label gave him N2 million out of the N10 million compensation paid by Eko Hotel and Suites after he was attacked at the facility.
Mr 2Kay said the incident and the way the compensation was handled influenced his decision to pursue a different path in the music industry.
The attack happened on October 22, 2017, after he performed at the Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless concert at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
He was reportedly assaulted, tied up and robbed at gunpoint in his hotel room by men who allegedly posed as room service personnel.
The incident sparked controversy, particularly after police arrested four suspects, including Burna Boy’s road manager, Joel Kantiok.
Burna Boy was declared wanted during the investigation but later turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently arraigned at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in December 2017 on charges relating to conspiracy and accessory to armed robbery and was granted bail.
The suspects reportedly confessed to being hired to attack Mr 2Kay, according to accounts of the police investigation.
The singer later withdrew the case after Burna Boy tendered an apology.
In August 2021, the pair were seen together at a Lagos nightclub in a viral video, suggesting that their long-running dispute had been resolved.
Reflecting on his professional journey, Mr 2Kay disclosed that he has now become a music executive.
He described the business side of the entertainment industry as lucrative, indicating that he has expanded his activities beyond performing as an artiste.
His latest comments have brought renewed focus to the dispute with his former label and the circumstances surrounding the compensation.
The singer’s experience also draws attention to the financial disagreements that can arise between recording artistes and their labels over money received from third parties.
