Actor Uzor Arukwe has spoken about the pressure women face to get married at a certain age, noting that society is gradually becoming more accepting of different choices concerning marriage and motherhood.
The Nollywood star made the remarks on the In My Opinion podcast, in a video shared on Instagram.
Arukwe said women were traditionally expected to marry and have children early, with those who remained single at 25 or 30 often subjected to questions about their relationship status.
He recalled how older people would compare their lives with those of younger women, pointing out that they had already married and had several children by the same age.
However, the actor said social attitudes were changing, with some women now choosing not to marry or become mothers.
“Growing up, people would ask you why you weren’t married at 25 or 30 and talk about how they already had five children by that age. Now, there are even women who don’t want to have children. I’ve met at least two or three,” he said.

Arukwe also argued that marriage places substantial responsibilities on women, particularly in relation to pregnancy, childbirth and social expectations.
He said these demands had influenced his position on marriage, explaining that he had never been particularly vocal in advocating for it.
According to him, a woman’s identity and value should not depend on whether she has a husband or children.
“So, I feel society is now beginning to catch on to the fact that marriage doesn’t define or make a woman,” he added.
His comments reflect broader conversations about changing attitudes towards family life and the growing acceptance of individual choices.
Arukwe’s position emphasises the importance of moving beyond age-based expectations and recognising that women can pursue different paths to personal fulfilment.
