Nigerian filmmaker Mo Abudu has revealed that she would rather date a man who is her age or older, explaining that her traditional outlook, personal standards and expectations influence her approach to relationships.

The 62-year-old media entrepreneur shared her views during an interview with Toke Makinwa, discussing what she now wants from a romantic partner and why she is unwilling to compromise on important aspects of her life.

During the conversation, Abudu dismissed the idea that a man could easily break her heart at her current age. She explained that while romantic disappointments might have affected her when she was younger, she now sees things differently.

The filmmaker said her work, rather than a romantic relationship, was more likely to be responsible if she found herself crying.

“I even cried recently. Heartbreak. Heartbreak. Nobody can break my heart. It’s not possible. Heartbreak. There’s no such thing as heartbreak at my age,” she said.

Abudu acknowledged that she had experienced the emotions associated with heartbreak in the past but maintained that she was no longer willing to let a man have that kind of influence over her feelings.

“If I cry, it’s not because of man. It may be because of my work. A man cannot make me cry. Okay, surely maybe when I was younger. I mean, we’ve all been there,” she added.

When asked whether she would go on a date with a man who approached her, Abudu said the answer would depend on the individual and whether he met the standards she had established.

She explained that reaching 62 had given her a clearer understanding of her goals and the kind of person she would consider suitable for a relationship.

The filmmaker also pointed out that she is financially independent and does not need a partner to provide for her or her family. She said this independence has influenced what she expects from a relationship.

“I can pretty much provide for myself. I can provide for my family, which I do,” she said.

According to Abudu, she is not interested in bringing someone into her life if the relationship would become a burden.

“The thing is that I don’t want anyone in my life that’s going to be a burden on me,” she stated.

Explaining her preference for men her age or slightly older, Abudu said her traditional views shape her decision. She also emphasised the importance of respect, adding that a potential partner should have achieved something meaningful in life.

Her comments reflect her desire for a relationship in which both people bring maturity, personal accomplishments and mutual respect rather than financial dependence or unnecessary pressure.
