Comedian AY Makun has responded to the backlash surrounding his Cardiff comedy show, apologising to disappointed attendees while insisting that the controversy will not make him abandon his career.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the Nigerian entertainer said he was saddened by calls for him to be cancelled over one difficult night, arguing that his more than 20 years in the industry should not be disregarded because of the incident.

AY said negative reports about him often attracted immediate attention, while his achievements and long-standing commitment to entertaining fans received less recognition.

He disclosed that some respected people in the entertainment industry had advised him not to respond to the controversy. However, he said he believed he owed an explanation to those who paid to attend the event.

According to AY, he had faced repeated challenges during the tour involving payment promises that were not fulfilled. He added that he had sometimes paid colleagues from his personal funds.

The comedian said a five-hour drive from Sheffield to Cardiff, combined with the difficulties he had experienced, contributed to his decision to react.

He nevertheless accepted responsibility for the disappointment experienced by the audience, stressing that the fans waiting at the venue were not responsible for the problems he described.

AY apologised for the wasted time and distress, asking critics to watch his video and consider his account before making judgments.

He acknowledged that members of the public could disagree with his actions but urged them to allow him to explain his side.

The comedian also stated that he would take lessons from the incident and continue working, despite efforts by some people to cancel him.

He asked the public to respect those who continued to support his shows and the AY brand, noting that not everyone had to be his fan.

As a gesture of goodwill, AY announced plans to stage a free show in Cardiff, which he said he would personally fund. He explained that the performance would depend on the confirmation of a suitable venue and other arrangements.

He stressed that the proposed event would not replace any refund owed to people who paid for the original show.

AY ended by thanking those who supported him and offered criticism with kindness, maintaining that he still had more laughter to share.
