Edo Incident: AAU Lecturer Dies in Hotel After Alleged Meeting With Sex Worker

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room in Edo State, with three people arrested as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Uwuigbe reportedly died on Sunday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

The police said the lecturer had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to the account provided by the Edo State Police Command, Jacob was a commercial sex worker who had allegedly been engaged by Uwuigbe.

The lecturer reportedly later asked her to leave the room to purchase water.

However, upon returning to the hotel room, Jacob allegedly discovered that Uwuigbe was lying lifeless on the bed.

The incident was reported to the police at approximately 8pm.

Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed that three individuals had been arrested in connection with the incident.

The arrested persons were identified as the hotel owner, the hotel manager and Jacob.

Ikoedem said the police received a report about the lecturer’s death after he had lodged at the hotel and allegedly engaged Jacob.

She explained that the woman had been sent out to buy water and discovered Uwuigbe dead when she returned.

According to the police spokesperson, investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the death.

She added that the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Ambrose Alli University has also confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, however, said the incident had no connection with the university because it occurred outside its premises.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” he said.

Aladenika further stated that the woman involved was not an AAU student.

The police investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet disclosed the official cause of the lecturer’s death.
