Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has fired back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo following comments describing his selection as vice-president in 1999 as the greatest mistake of Obasanjo’s presidency.
Reacting in a strongly worded statement on Saturday, Atiku said the former president’s comments were another unsuccessful attempt to rewrite Nigeria’s political history.
According to Atiku, he remained loyal to Obasanjo during his incarceration under military rule and provided support to both the former president and his family until his release.
He further claimed that after Obasanjo left prison, he played a significant role in rebuilding his political career by mobilising support across the country and contributing to the alliance that produced the PDP victory in the 1999 presidential election.

The former vice-president also defended his opposition to the controversial third-term agenda, insisting that he chose constitutional democracy over personal loyalty.
Atiku maintained that no Nigerian, regardless of political influence or accomplishments, is greater than the Constitution.
He said Nigerians eventually defeated the alleged third-term project, describing it as one of the defining victories for democratic governance in the country.
The former vice-president dismissed suggestions that he regretted helping Obasanjo, saying acts of kindness should never be performed with the expectation of future rewards.
He nevertheless criticised what he called repeated attempts to diminish his contributions to one of Nigeria’s most successful economic reform periods.
According to Atiku, respected members of the former administration continue to acknowledge his role, despite efforts to erase his achievements.
He concluded by urging political leaders to concentrate on solving the country’s security and economic challenges rather than revisiting personal disagreements dating back nearly two decades.
