Ali Ndume, the lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District in the National Assembly has called on the Nigerian government to make the Senate a part-time job.
Ndume, in an interview on Trust TV on Friday, said the Senate and all legislators do not go to the office daily, but only during plenary sessions and at different committee levels.
Nduma also advocated for the introduction of part-time roles in the Senate, where members would only earn a salary when they are sitting at plenary or committee level.
“I said it, what are we doing?” he said. We have recessed a few times. Let’s get paid for sitting. You get paid to sit. If you’re not seated, you don’t get paid.
“And to me, we can even make the National Assembly work part time. On Wednesday, we all met for an emergency meeting for this year, important national issues, that is the state policing even though I have reservations as to the speed and the way they are doing it.
The Senate is a committee of elders. You don’t just sit down one day and say, ‘Hey, the President wants state police,’ and just pass it overnight.
“You are supposed to sit down, think about it, and get input. The bill has been passed by us. “Did the state police go off today?”
