Nigerian Army Expands Security Engagement With Universities

The Nigerian Army is expanding security collaborations with universities in the Northeast to secure campuses, enhance community resilience and combat extremist narratives that fuel terrorist recruitment.

The emerging partnership was further cemented on Monday when university leaders from around the region paid a visit to Headquarters Joint Task Force Northeast, Operation HADIN KAI, to discuss campus security, intelligence sharing and measures for protecting students, staff and academic communities.

The delegation led by the former Vice-Chancellor of Ahman Pategi University, Professor Ali Audu Sani includes Vice-Chancellor of Al-Ansar University, Professor Fanna Inna Abdulrahman and Vice-Chancellor of Borno State University, Professor Babagana Gutti.

The university authorities accepted security assessments already carried out by Operation HADIN KAI, which identified vulnerabilities and recommended measures covering perimeter protection, surveillance, communication and emergency preparedness.

Some of the recommendations, such as enhanced perimeter security, the installation of surveillance cameras and upgrades to communication systems, have since been implemented.

The development indicates a shift to a coordinated security model, where academic institutions are involved in early warning, information sharing and preparedness, rather than treating university security as an isolated campus-management responsibility.

Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the Theater Commander, Operation HADIN KAI, described educational institutions as critical national assets and emphasized that their protection is beyond physical security.

Security and education are closely linked, he said, in that the development of human capital and resilience in the community were important for the attainment of lasting stability in the Northeast.

This brings universities into the wider non-kinetic dimension of counter-terrorism. Academic institutions can help reduce vulnerabilities to radicalization, misinformation and extremist propaganda as well as helping secure campuses against direct threats.

Major General Abubakar said that educated and resilient young people are less prone to terrorist recruitment and that universities have a role in promoting patriotism, responsible citizenship and resistance to extremist narratives.

The approach also reflects the increasingly integrated character of Operation HADIN KAI’s security strategy, which combines military operations with intelligence-led protection, institutional engagement and measures aimed at reducing the conditions that allow extremist networks to attract and influence vulnerable populations.

Therefore, the Theater Commander urged the university authorities to continue implementing the security recommendations, boost internal vigilance and keep good communication with the security agencies for early warning and quick response to any threat.

For their part, the university leaders pledged continued cooperation and timely information-sharing with security agencies while commending troops for their sacrifices and the improving security environment, which they said had strengthened confidence and created better conditions for academic activities.
