UBER Exits Uganda, Nigeria Market

Ride-hailing company Uber has discontinued its operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026.

Head of Communications for Uber in East and West Africa, Lorraine Onduru said in a statement that the decision followed a review of the company’s business priorities and investment focus across Africa.

She said the decision was limited to Nigeria and Uganda and would not affect Uber’s operations in other African countries.

Onduru said Uber remained committed to Sub-Saharan Africa, where it continued to see growth and long-term opportunities.

She said the company’s immediate priority was to support affected drivers, riders and employees during the transition.

According to her, Uber had begun communicating directly with employees, drivers and riders about arrangements following the discontinuation of its services.

She said active drivers would receive a token of appreciation as they transitioned out of the platform.

Onduru also said rider support would remain available for 21 days after the end of operations to address outstanding and transition-related issues.

She added that ”Uber for Business services in Nigeria would also be discontinued, with affected partners being contacted about the transition”.

On data privacy, Onduru said” information belonging to riders would continue to be handled in accordance with applicable data protection laws, privacy requirements and Uber’s data protection policies”.

She said data would be retained only for periods required by law, while appropriate security measures would remain in place.

Onduru also clarified that Uber’s decision to leave Nigeria was not related to the recent directive by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, concerning e-hailing operations at Nigerian airports.

She reiterated that the decision was based on Uber’s broader review of its business priorities and investment focus across Africa.
