Veteran actress Patience Ozokwor has cautioned parents against protecting their children from all hardship, warning that such an approach could erode their ability to handle life’s challenges.
Ozokwor popularly known as Mama G gave this advice in an interview on Femi Babs TV where she spoke on parenting, wealth and raising independent children.
The actress argued that parents trying to shield their children from the hardships they themselves went through growing up might inadvertently deny them vital life lessons.
“There’s a difference between letting children suffer and letting them struggle through manageable challenges,” she said.
She said, “The quickest way to screw up a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to go through what you went through. I’m not saying let them suffer. What I mean is, let them struggle. “Go through the motions.
Ozokwor also spoke about rich parents who bequeath their children many properties without teaching them the value of hard work and the sacrifices that go into acquiring such wealth.
She noted a parent who has houses in several cities, saying that children might grow up without knowing the difficulty parents faced in acquiring them.

“Can you imagine you have like 20 houses, and they don’t struggle? You have it in Enugu, you have it in Aba, you have it in Lagos. Your children will be just struggling, “Which one is mine? “They don’t know how hard you’ve worked to get those things,” she said. Travel Guides & Travelogs
The actress encouraged parents to let their kids work for what they want while making sure they know comfort and privilege is not something to be taken for granted.
Ozokwor also suggested parents allow their children to face some life’s struggles so they may build resilience and appreciate the opportunities that come their way.
She said that children who grow up with too much comfort can end up believing an easy life is guaranteed.
“Tell your children about the pains of life. They may not know all the pains, but the little they know will tell them that when they look back, they will see that people go through harder ones and they will thank God for where they are,” she added.
