Brent Crude Climbs To $86.79 As US-Iran Tensions Fuel Market Fears

Tuesday saw a dramatic increase in global crude oil prices, reaching their highest point in a month as concerns about potential disruptions to the world’s oil supply through the vital Strait of Hormuz were heightened by new military engagements between the United States and Iran.

The US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) increased by 3.16 percent to $80.61 per barrel, while Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, increased by 4.19 percent to $86.79 per barrel, its highest level since June 12.

The most recent demonstration came after the United States reimposed a naval embargo on Iran, intensifying tensions in the Middle East and raising concerns about the security of one of the busiest oil transportation lanes in the world. This was followed by intensified military confrontations between Washington and Tehran.
Approximately one-fifth of the world’s petroleum products and crude oil are transported via the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Because of concerns about a scarcity of supply, any disruption to shipping operations in the waterway frequently results in substantial spikes in the price of oil globally.

Just one month has passed since the United States, Israel, and Iran reached a ceasefire agreement that ended hostilities throughout the area, including in Lebanon, and allowed the Strait of Hormuz to reopen. Since then, oil prices have decreased. Brent crude had dropped to about $82 a barrel at the time, giving rise to expectations of lower fuel prices worldwide.

Calls for gasoline marketers to lower pump prices in Nigeria were triggered by the previous drop in global crude prices.
Oil marketers were accused by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) of failing to account for the significant decline in crude oil prices in retail gas prices, claiming that the reported reductions were out of proportion to the worldwide market decline.

Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, also revealed that the Federal Government had initiated talks with industry regulators and marketers to guarantee that changes in global crude prices are more accurately reflected in the prices that consumers pay.

On July 10, the Federal Government called a conference of important players in the oil and gas sector to discuss equitable and transparent pricing of petroleum products nationwide in order to address pricing concerns.

The most recent increase in crude prices, according to analysts, could make it more difficult to maintain stable fuel prices if the Middle East crisis continues. This is because rising international oil prices usually result in higher import costs, which could put additional pressure on domestic pump prices in nations that depend on imported refined petroleum products.

Because any protracted disruption to oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz might further limit global supplies and drive up petroleum prices, market observers will keep an eye on events in the Middle East.
